ABSTRACT

The achievement of autonomy and a new self-concept is the major task of adolescence. During this stage of the family life cycle, a similar goal must be met by the parents who are facing an “empty nest” future. Thus, the two generations are simultaneously grappling with the conflict of dependence versus independence. The ambivalence that accompanies this struggle exacerbates the push-pull phenomenon, mixed messages, and confusion on the part of both parties.
