ABSTRACT

The individual with the classical narcissistic personality disorder presents with a façade of grandiosity, self preoccupation, and the constant pursuit of admiration. He or she is perfectionistic in striving for money, power, wealth, and fame, shows an extreme sense of entitlement, and lacks empathy and concern for others. The narcissist exploits others to mirror and admire the false defensive grandiose self. Beneath this seemingly impenetrable facade, there exists a fragmented self manifested in intense envy, rage, feelings of worthlessness and rejection, and a pervasive sense of impotence and inadequacy. The grandiose façade of the narcissist can break down dramatically under relatively minor exposure to criticism, rejection, or even lack of acknowledgment.
