ABSTRACT

One of the most common and important questions an incestuously abusing family can ask is: How did this happen to us? Most family members know that the answer to this question is complex. However, even when the Vulnerability to Incest model is explained to them, it is rare for a family to have a clear “picture” of what caused incest in their family. The Structural Session, which is a psychoeducational procedure that is presented didactically in the middle of Stage I, was designed to help the family understand how incest happened in a way that they can use as a basis of change. The structural session is usually held after the initial crisis has been managed and a therapeutic relationship has been established.
