ABSTRACT

I will tell you the story of our training in Milan. In the beginning there was The Expert. The therapist had to train him/herself to observe the system in a correct manner, that is, the systemic manner, which was an arbitrary choice, the choice of looking at the family with the cybernetic epistemology we learned through the work of Bateson (1972). This epistemology consists of the following principles: Everything we see is seen as a world of messages and information. Everything a person does or says is a message to somebody. If nobody listens, there is no message. Therefore, if there is a message there must be a listener.
