ABSTRACT

In tackling the problem of change and personal evolution, the focus of attention is usually on looking for those aspects of personality and cognitive reality that afford a foothold for change, and for those techniques which seem to reliably take advantage of those footholds. Anyone who has worked as an agent of change, either for others or for himself, knows what a frustrating search this can be. The fact is that people are remarkably resilient and tenacious when it comes to maintaining their beliefs and behaviors. For every beneficiary of a one-session miracle cure, there are hundreds of other people who spend hundreds of hours “working” on themselves, trying to change.
