Family Art Therapy and Sexual Abuse

The 12-week introductory group program for sexually abused children described in this chapter was designed for a small community mental health facility that offered family therapy, but wished to supplement it with group experience.* Group treatment for victims of molestation has been documented repeatedly as an important component in the healing process, and the design here was a modified multifamily group milieu with females and their nonoffending mothers. Recognizing the generational nature of molestation (James & Nasjleti, 1983; Russell, 1986), the co-leaders felt that it was important to include the mothers in the hope of interrupting the cycle.
