The Psychotherapies for the Elderly Self: Diagnoses and Plans

In performing psychotherapy for the elderly, it is especially important to have a complete diagnosis of the patient's self-deficits and of the areas of the self that are intact, as well as an awareness of the intactness or deficits in the patient's mentational processes. This is the process of establishing the so-called empathic diagnosis. Another essential task is that of matching the difficulties and strengths of the self of the patient with the appropriate therapy, the therapeutic diagnosis.
