ABSTRACT

Problems with substance abuse and chemical dependency have become epidemic in our adolescent population. Violent deaths due to accidents, suicide, and homicide make up 80 percent of teenage mortality. Half of these deaths involve alcohol and drugs. A large proportion of hospitalized teenagers have abused alcohol and drugs, and this situation must be assessed and addressed as part of their integrated treatment programs. In this chapter, I will describe the specific components and therapeutic processes involved in a model chemical dependence recovery track of a general inpatient psychiatric treatment program.
