ABSTRACT
Emotion, the life force, is also the death force. I believe that at the level of humankind emotion is the force that, by mediating between the environment and the actions of our forebears, determined who lived and who died, shaping our genes and making the human race what it is. At the interpersonal level, emotion is the force that, by mediating between ourselves and our social world, shapes our relationships and hence our personalities. At the personal level, the unemotional life is not worth living.
