ABSTRACT

Professionals often resist, indeed fear, involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) or other 12-step programs. The image of A.A. may be unappealing to them. They expect to be linked with the down and out, the dregs of humanity. Attendance at A.A. may symbolize the depth of their “fall,” and they may prefer to believe that they aren't that bad, that they can manage this problem on their own or with the help of professional therapists.
