Safety First: Approaching Treatment of the Schizoid Disorder of the Self
In contrast to borderline and narcissistic disorders of the self, until recently relatively little attention has been paid in the professional literature to the schizoid disorder of the self. It was almost as if mental health professionals were resonating with schizoid patients' fears of the dire consequences of their being seen or heard. This lack of interest has changed with clinicians' growing awareness that, with adaptations of technique, patients with disorders of the self can be treated successfully with psychotherapy. This success has enhanced the interest in and recognition of the schizoid disorder of the self.
