Season of Light/Season of Darkness: The Effects of Burying and Remembering Traumatic Sexual Abuse on the Sense of Self

Some years ago, one of my patients revealed a multiple personality disorder (also known as dissociative identity disorder). Another patient, Ms. A., who has a borderline personality disorder (and whose case will be discussed in detail), began to remember traumatic experiences of sexual abuse that had spanned her entire childhood. Both had forgotten the abuse, even while it was happening, and both had continued to forget this abusive history throughout their adult lives until psychotherapy stimulated recall.
