ABSTRACT

When a couple come for therapy because their sexual relationship is unsatisfactory due to reported sexual dysfunction on the part of one or both spouses, a therapist may find a systemic approach helpful in conceptualizing and treating the difficulty. One systemic approach the authors have found beneficial is Relationship Enhancement Marriage and Family Therapy. The following sections briefly describe the sexual dysfunction known as vaginismus, then describe Relationship Enhancement Marriage and Family Therapy and how it can be a useful approach in treating vaginismus. A case study provides an example of how Relationship Enhancement (RE) therapy was utilized with a couple in which the woman was diagnosed with vaginismus.
