ABSTRACT

Good marital relationships are delicate creations, held together primarily by our ability to understand what is required in an intimate relationship and the ability to meet life's challenges with courage and determination. We bring to marriage that which we bring to life-a physical being with genetic propensities and a life-style we have created through our own experiences. It is thus reasonable to assume that if we bring into marriage poor health or a "neurotic" life-style, we handicap the marriage from the beginning. Any condition that interferes with our ability to cooperate or to use consensual thinking will interfere with marriage. Bipolar disorder is just such an illness.
