ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on care provides the meeting ground between spirituality and psychotherapy. The same optimism drives the spiritual quest toward the vision of God in hopes that it can come in spite of darkness, human frailty, or wrongdoing. Caring unites psychotherapy and spirituality through participation in a presence greater than ourselves. Wherever people doing psychotherapy engage the human spirit in its darker moments, they become involved in a spiritual dimension of existence. Both psychotherapy and the spiritual quest begin with the judgment that something is not as it should be. In spirituality, what is wrong is the presence of sin, which in religious traditions encompasses everything that separates us from God. So far as the spiritual disciplines are concerned, sin has always stood for whatever it is that separates us from God. Magic seeks to produce a desired effect or result through the use of various techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or forces of nature.
