ABSTRACT

Lithium is the drug of choice for the treatment of adults with bipolar disorder.1 While there are no extensive, placebo-controlled, double-blind studies assessing lithium's efficacy in treating bipolar disorder in children and adolescents, open-label studies have revealed that it can be helpful in this population.2 Lithium's only FDA-established indication, however, is for the acute and maintenance treatment of bipolar disorders in patients at least 12 years old.
