ABSTRACT

Language characterizes us as human and is the primary mode of communication in all cultures. We understand the language of others, we think with words, and we produce speech that will be understood. For most of us, language enters the human communication system through hearing, is processed through various cognitive mechanisms, and is expressed by speech. Mastery of language comprehension and production is important for developing self-image, as social interaction, as a base to acquire reading, writing, and some math, and relates to ultimate dependence or independence in adulthood.
