ABSTRACT

Following a downward trend from the 1980s through 1992, adolescent alcohol and substance abuse is on the rise. According to a 1994 survey by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)(Johnston, O’Malley, & Bachman, 1993, 1995), the peak annual prevalence rate (i.e., the use of any illicit drug one or more times in the prior 12 months) among high-school seniors in 1979 was 54 percent, and in 1992 was 27 percent.
