Recent Advances in the Prediction of Marital Outcomes

D Introduction The goal of preventing marital dysfunction is especially significant given the statistics on the success of traditional marital therapy: Fewer than half of the couples who seek out therapy show sustained improvement following treatment (Jacobson & Addis, 1993). Premarital interventions have a unique role to play in that they can help couples resolve potential problems before problems become entrenched within a marriage and erode the commitment to the marriage. This advantage would be most salient for the couples who are at the greatest risk for developing significant levels of marital discord and dysfunction.
