ABSTRACT

The long-term (potentially intermittent) treatment for children with internalizing or externalizing disorders and their families continues to follow the same broad principles emphasized throughout this volume. The respect the family experiences as the therapist emphasizes and supports the health within the family relationships is remembered. The practical suggestions that build mastery or reduce symptoms always help the child and family recognize that the therapist has a knowledge base that can help them. Mastering this way of working will provide the therapist with a sense of satisfaction as well as provide assistance that is greatly appreciated by the families with whom the therapist works.
