ABSTRACT

The theme for this conference, "Historical and Current Perspectives on New Ideas in Psychoanalysis," could not have been chosen at a more appropriate time. The recent death of Anna Freud only serves to dramatize the need for such discussion . I believe we are entering upon a new phase in the history of psychoanalysis . Within a few years , there will be no survivors of "the golden age of psychoanalysis ." No longer will there be any individuals who were direct pupils of Freud or who had continuing contact with him. We are on the threshold of the post-apostolic period of psychoanalysis, in which no one will be able to substantiate a claim of being the confirmed representative of the fountainhead of psychoanalytic authority.
