ABSTRACT

The last 15 years have brought about an enthusiasm regarding the father's role in the family. Fathers have been invited to attend child birth preparation classes, even participate in the birth of their children, and many now are active participants in child psychotherapy. This enthusiasm has naively assumed that all fathers should be in all these activities, right from the beginning. Fathers who are not comfortable participating may feel guilty and awkwardj yet there are many and varied ways to involve the father. Timing and motivation are crucial factors.
