As my therapeutic experience has grown, I have learned, empirical­ ly, that to have a reasonable chance to assist people with problems stemming from early phases of development, the mutual security of a psychoanalytic framework provides the optimal setting. From a theo­ retical perspective, however, we must never forget that the entities hitherto regarded as psychopathological categories are in actuality successful, albeit sometimes inconvenient, adaptive maneuvers that may be rendered irrelevant by relatively minor changes in life circum­ stances.
