Three Self Psychologies or One?

First, as to the origin of mental pathology: Although Goldberg (1988) entitled a chapter of his book, "The Unempathic Child," thereby emphasizing constitutional character dispositions and all the unknowns and unpredictables that are encountered in psychoanalytic practice, essentially there is agreement about the origins of pathology. It occurs not through impediments to drive discharge, not through the consequences of inborn, unconscious fantasies, but through the transactions between child and caretakers and how these transactions are experienced, registered, and subsequently transformed in development.
