ABSTRACT
Substance abusers have a penchant for adopting the use of addictive substances and behaviors as a means to control or regulate painful and confusing affect states that they are otherwise unable to achieve on their own. Despite this, however, other factors such as biological and sociocultural ones need to be considered as well for an understanding of the evolution of addictive problems.
