ABSTRACT

When I was young, idealistic, and looking for a job, I made inquiry at three of the University of Chicago's centers of precollegiate education. Bruno Bettelheim, at the time a relatively unknown figure, responded for the Orthogenic School, the University's center for the rehabilitation of severely emotionally disturbed children. He suggested that I read his recently published book about the school and its work, Love Is Not Enough (Bettelheim, 1950).
