Pages 23

N a r cissist ic disturbance is the context for this chapter'sexamination of shame and shame theory. Morrison's(1989) book, Shame: The Underside ofNarcissism, explores this shame context, so I will draw heavily on that text, in which Morrison reviews Kohut's thinking on self-development, notes Kohut's inattention to shame, and undertakes modifications of Kohutian theory in order to carve out a larger place for shame.
