play in child analysis (and in adult analysis) is a complex and changing phenomenon. It may involve displacement, enactment, or direct interaction with the analyst. It may feature only one mode of activity, an unvarying, identifiable series, or a collection of activities under the sway of differing developmental and dynamic pressures. Techniques may shift and stages vary within the same child.
