ABSTRACT

Jill and Mary are a lesbian couple who have been together for two years. This is Jill’s first lesbian relationship and it is Mary’s third. Mary is thirty-three and she is active in the local lesbian community. Jill is twenty-five and she is in the early stages of coming out. She has told only her sister and a few close friends that she is involved with a woman. Jill is feeling ambivalent about the relationship, whereas Mary feels a growing commitment to it. They agree to go to couples counseling. They live in an area where there are few lesbian therapists and Mary has socialized with most of them. They decide to see a recognized couples therapist who is a heterosexually identified woman.
