ABSTRACT

Welcome to the new Book Review Section of Progress in Self Psychology. This 2004 issue inaugurates the book review as another way to respond to the important expansions, shifts, and changes occurring in contemporary psychoanalytic thought. Why do we need a book review section? What are some specific reasons for this addition? Our premise is that a book review essay generally has a wider lens than that of a particular journal article. It can take a broader look at thematic changes within the field, can survey the development of a particular individual's thought over time, and can trace the elaboration of ideas that may have first appeared in more condensed form on these very pages. It is, thus, a place to compare and contrast the developed ideas of our colleagues and to measure their theoretical and clinical implications.
