ABSTRACT

Although the precise effects of trauma on the brain are not yet understood, there is a consensus that it has significant impact on brain functioning. Studies in animals support the hypothesis that trauma produces long-lasting effects on neurobiological functioning. Intriguing new findings based on neuroimaging suggest that this is also true in humans. To what extent the changes are reversible or permanent is an important unanswered question. Equally important is the question of mitigating versus exacerbating factors.
