ABSTRACT

THE BEHAVIORAL LITERATURE IS VOLUMINOUS, and Selecting symptom-focused interventions that are compatible with a psychoanalytic psychotherapy is challenging. Some behavioral techniques, such as systematic desensitization, are quite time consuming to implement. My focus here is on effective interventions that can easily be integrated into a psychoanalytic treatment. In choosing them, I used the following criteria: employing the technique should not require sustained blocks of session time; discussion and use of the technique can easily be interspersed with dialogue on other topics, including insight-oriented material prompted by the technique; and use of the technique should not be so discrepant with the usual roles of the therapist and the patient that it generates significant confusion or discomfort.
