The Respondent or Classical-Conditioning Model

The respondent model focuses on maladaptive behaviors which are acquired or maintained by classical, or Pavlovian, conditioning. In this model the key concept is contiguity; stimuli which are close to each other or close to a response in either space or time have the ability to become associated. The basic assessment question, as indicated in the flowchart (p. 000), concerns whether the client's behavioral problems are under stimulus control.
