ABSTRACT
Birth epitomizes the merger of biomedical and social-psychological phenomena. It is conceptualized both as a dangerous medical event, requiring the close supervision of a specialist, while at the same time representing the most natural expression of the human condition. This chapter addresses two issues that reflect this merger, the timing of birth and actual delivery practices.
