ABSTRACT

Organ transplantation can transform the quality of a person’s life, and often save it. Organs are transplanted into patients who are on an organ donor waiting list but there is an acute shortage of available organs in the UK – a situation which we will examine in this chapter. This chapter examines the Human Tissue Act 2004 (HT) with its emphasis on consent in Part 1, and then considers the legal and ethical issues that arise in organ transplantation in Part 2.
