ABSTRACT

Previously we have seen that where a patient lacks competence, medical professionals will act in the patient’s best interests. Here, we explore what amounts to ‘best interests’ in circumstances where the patient lacks competence and had not contemplated how he or she would wish to be treated if the situation arose.
