ABSTRACT

Reflecting about the self remains a familiar and favorite topic of many people. It is understandable, therefore, that the notion of a self-concept is grasped and appreciated so viscerally by the public. Additionally, the fact that clinical and research evidence has established self-esteem as the variable that is most indicative of life adjustment has not escaped attention. It follows that enhanced self-esteem is often operationalized in research to reflect the “feel good” phenomenon accompanying physical activity. Moreover, the symbiosis of physical activity and self-esteem has assumed reality in the minds of the public, the journalist, and the exercise leader.
