ABSTRACT

According to legend, around the year 2200 bc sake was invented by a man in China and presented to King Wu. King Wu enjoyed sake so much that he became drunk for several days. He then immediately issued a law prohibiting sake, saying: “Sake is so good that people will surely be unable to limit their drinking and will ruin themselves and the country.” But this prohibition did not last long. King Wu's son, King Ketu, filled a pond with sake and decked the forest with barbecued meats. This luxuriant lifestyle was thought to have led to the ruin of the kingdom.
