ABSTRACT

The topic of pleasure introduces the question of restraints on pleasure, particularly internal constraints, which may result in guilt. This chapter explores the links between restraint, pleasure, and guilt. Pleasure often has been seen in the literature as an immature motivation, although Engel and Szasz have recognized mature and immature versions of pleasure seeking. At the same time, restraint on pleasure can be accompanied by guilt. It also can alternate with excessive behavior and may result in a disorder per se, such as anorexia or bulimia. Mature, integrated pleasure seeking may, by contrast, offer valuable insights into public health models.
