ABSTRACT

During the past 40 years the environment of the college campus has changed dramatically. While the actual number of students attending postsecondary institutions increased significantly during that time, they were fairly homogeneous in terms of race, ethnicity, sex, age, and socioeconomic status. On the other hand, today’s students are as diverse as society at large. Racial and ethnic minorities now populate institutions in ever-increasing numbers. Women outnumber men on most campuses, and the average age of students is increasing on many. Federal financial assistance has brought to campus students from every socioeconomic class.
