ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper reviews studies of processing of monkey-images by nonhuman primates of same and different species. We describe some ethological approaches to primate cognition that have a bearing on this. We then review the literature on experimental studies of conspecific and face perception in non-human primates in order to clarify those aspects of the image which may be processed by monkeys, with implications for human visual processing of such stimuli. The aim of the review is to provide a general overview, with methodological comments, of behavioural studies in this field.
