ABSTRACT

T his chapter focuses on how working models of the self change in the con-text of relationships from both clinical and social/personality perspectives.Extensive literatures in both traditions describe how the self develops and is regulated in the context of relationships, but the literatures on change in models of self are smaller and less explicit. Yet, the notion of change is important in both traditions, with both recognizing the necessity of change. We begin this chapter by describing prominent models of the self in relationships from clinical and social/ personality perspectives, and we discuss how we might define models of self that take into account these different perspectives. The next section describes theories of development and change in the self in relationships from social/personality and clinical perspectives. The final section discusses common themes across these two traditions.
