ABSTRACT

For many years, teleological concepts such as goal and its appendages were banned from psychology by behaviourists, who accused them of being shamefully metaphysical. With cognitive science these concepts have re-entered the field with full status by virtue of the cybernetic models. In a number of still separate domains (decision theory, AI, etc.), these models have seen increasing development. An attempt to rethink the field of psychology as a whole with a goal-governed approach, as we call it, was made by Miller et al. in 1960; so far, their ideas do not seem to have been fully developed.
