To refer to habitual actions in the past Todos los días me levantaba a las 5 de la mañana y solía ir a entrenar. (Every day I woke up at 5 in the morning and used to go training.)

To describe people, places and objects in the past

La casa era oscura y siniestra. Tenía un jardín que parecía una jungla. (The house was dark and sinister. It had a garden which looked like a jungle.)

To set the scene in a narrative in the past (the actions would normally be in the preterite)
