ABSTRACT
A very large number of Spanish verbs can be pronominalized, even intransitive verbs like 'to be' and 'to die'. It is misleading to give the name 'reflexive' to such verbs. 'Reflexive' refers to just one of the meanings that a pronominal verb can have, i.e that the subject performs an action on or for him/herself, as in Tm washing myself', 'they give themselves airs', etc. The range of meanings expressed by pronominal verbs is much wider than this, and the relationship between them is sometimes subtle:
