ABSTRACT

The defi nite article is obligatory when a demonstrative adjective follows the noun: la gente aquella. The demonstrative after a noun remains an adjective, so it is not written with an accent. In apposition a following demonstrative is a pronoun: su novia tosía mucho, síntoma éste/este que le preocupaba intensamente ‘his girlfriend was coughing a lot, this being a symptom that worried him intensely’. See the next section for the optional accent on éste.
