ABSTRACT
The infi nitive may act as a verb or noun. In the latter case it is masculine and usually singular: fumar es malo para la salud ‘smoking is bad for the health’. One must not use the gerund to translate this kind of English sentence: *fumando es malo para la salud is defi nitely not Spanish.
