ABSTRACT
In passive sentences the object of a verb becomes the subject: ‘they signed the deal’ > ‘the deal was signed’. The latter is a type of impersonal sentence, but the agent of the action could be included-‘the deal was signed by the heads of state’—in which case it is no longer impersonal.
