ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on ‘literary’ narrative. Specifically it compares a short extract from two different versions of the same novel, Bleak House by Charles Dickens. The first is from the original nineteenth-century text, as published by Oxford University Press, and the second from a simplified Guided Reader, written by Margaret Tarner, published in the twentieth century by Heinemann and intended for learners of English. The broad aim of the study is to compare the different linguistic choices made when expressing the same basic content and at the same time to gain some insight into what might constitute a ‘literary’ text.
