ABSTRACT

This chapter is divided into three parts. In Part 1, we define neuropsychological rehabilitation and describe its origins relating neuropsychological rehabilitation to the concept of disability in the World Health Organization International Classification of Functioning. In Part 2, we describe the three stages of rehabilitation including acute, post-acute and community, and describe specific cognitive impairments following traumatic brain injury. In Part 3, we distinguish between the cognitive, behavioural, holistic and cognitive neuropsychological approaches to neuropsychological rehabilitation. In Case history box 13.1 (page 219) we illustrate these methods in the treatment of acquired dyslexia.
